And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again. And he said this plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? For what can a man give in return for his soul? For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

Heavenly Father,
You spoke plainly about the cost of following You. You did not hide the suffering, the rejection, or the cross. Yet even when Your words were difficult, they were filled with truth, love, and purpose. You call me not to comfort, but to commitment; not to self-preservation, but to surrender.
I confess, Lord, that like Peter, I am sometimes tempted to resist Your ways when they do not align with my understanding or expectations. I ask that You guard my heart from setting my mind on human desires instead of divine purpose. Teach me to see life through Your eternal perspective.
I pray, Father, that You give me the grace to deny myself daily—not my identity in You, but my pride, my selfish ambitions, my need for control, and my fear of loss. Help me to take up my cross willingly, embracing obedience even when it is costly, uncomfortable, or unseen by others.
Remind me, Lord, that gaining the whole world is meaningless if my soul is neglected. Let me never trade eternal life for temporary success, approval, or comfort. Shape my heart so that my life is fully surrendered for Your sake and the gospel.
Give me courage to follow You without shame, to stand firm in Your truth in a broken and confused world, and to live boldly for Your name. May my life reflect a surrendered heart that trusts You completely—knowing that in losing my life to You, I truly find it.
