And they sent to him some of the Pharisees and some of the Herodians, to trap him in his talk. And they came and said to him, “Teacher, we know that you are true and do not care about anyone’s opinion. For you are not swayed by appearances, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? Should we pay them, or should we not?” But, knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them, “Why put me to the test? Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.” And they brought one. And he said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said to him, “Caesar’s.” Jesus said to them, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they marveled at him.
Prayer Root: Word to Prayer
Heavenly Father,
You see through every hidden motive and every disguised intention. When the world tries to trap truth with clever questions and divided loyalties, You respond with wisdom that silences deception and reveals the heart.
I pray, Lord, that I will never live a divided life—giving You my words while my heart belongs elsewhere. Teach me to discern what belongs to this world and what belongs to You, and never confuse the two. Teach me to fulfill my earthly responsibilities faithfully with integrity, obedience, and respect, while never compromising my allegiance to You alone.
Remind me, Father, that while earthly systems may bear human images, I bear Your image. My life, my identity, my devotion, and my worship belong wholly to You. Let nothing—power, politics, fear, or approval—take the place in my heart that belongs solely to You.
Guard me from hypocrisy and surface-level faith. Align my actions with my confession. May my obedience to earthly authority never replace my surrender to divine authority. Let my life reflect clear loyalty to Your kingdom, grounded in truth, wisdom, and humility.
Teach me to live wisely in this world while remaining fully set apart for You, until my whole life becomes an offering rendered back to the God whose image I bear.
