Mark 12: 1-12 (The Parable of the Tenants)

Scripture (ESV)

And he began to speak to them in parables. “A man planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a pit for the winepress and built a tower, and leased it to tenants and went into another country. When the season came, he sent a servant to the tenants to get from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. And they took him and beat him and sent him away empty-handed. Again he sent to them another servant, and they struck him on the head and treated him shamefully. And he sent another, and him they killed. And so with many others: some they beat, and some they killed. He had still one other, a beloved son. Finally he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ But those tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ And they took him and killed him and threw him out of the vineyard. What will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenants and give the vineyard to others. Have you not read this Scripture:
“‘The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
this was the Lord’s doing,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’?”
And they were seeking to arrest him but feared the people, for they perceived that he had told the parable against them. So they left him and went away.

Prayer Root: Word to Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Through this parable You reveal both Your generous provision and the pride of hearts that forget You. You remind me that my life, my time, this earth, and every resource I enjoy are not possessions I own, but gifts entrusted to me. I am not an owner— I am but a steward of the space You have entrusted to me on this earth, and everything I have belongs to You.

I pray, Lord, that I will always live with this awareness: that I am accountable to You for how I guard, nurture, and multiply what You have placed in my hands. Not for personal gain or comfort, but for the faithful proclamation of the gospel and the bearing of spiritual fruit.

Guard my heart, Lord, from pride, entitlement, and resistance to Your authority. Judge my intentions, refine my motives, and keep me humble before You. Help me honor and receive the true messengers You send—through Your Word, through godly mentors, and through the gentle conviction of Your Spirit.

May Christ, the rejected stone, be the cornerstone of my life. Let my heart not yearn for worldly gain, greed, or self-interest, but be firmly anchored in Him alone. Teach me to live with reverent fear—knowing that You are patient and loving, yet also a just Judge before whom I will one day stand.

Shape my life to reflect faithful obedience, fruitful stewardship, and wholehearted surrender, until the day You come to collect what is due and find a heart yielded fully to You.

Rooted in prayer, rejoicing in Christ.
