Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them. And he answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” For he perceived that it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead. And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?” And they cried out again, “Crucify him.” And Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.” So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.
Prayer Root: Word to Prayer
Heavenly Father,
How beautiful and yet deeply symbolic it is that on the very path to the cross, You allowed a guilty man to be released while You took his place. Barabbas walked free, and Jesus—holy and blameless—was condemned. Is this not the very heart of Your mission? To die for undeserving sinners like me.
I pray, Lord, give me the courage to stand when my faith in You is questioned. Do not let me be like Pilate—holding authority yet surrendering truth out of fear of people. Strengthen me to choose obedience over approval.
I pray, Lord, grant me the wisdom to stand with You, even when Your will does not align with my desires, ambitions, comforts, or preferences. Keep me from drifting from You when surrender comes at a cost, unlike the chief priests who rejected You to protect their power and position.
I pray, Lord, help me stand firm in discernment. Guard my mind and heart from being stirred, swayed, or brainwashed into decisions that oppose Your will. Do not let the clamor of the world drown out Your voice. Teach me to follow You faithfully, even when the world cries otherwise.
You took my place on the cross—now teach me to take my place at Your feet, surrendered, faithful, and unashamed.
