And they went to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled. And he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch.” And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour? Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words. And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they did not know what to answer him. And he came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough; the hour has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”
Prayer Root: Word to Prayer
Heavenly Father,
In the garden of Gethsemane, You revealed the depth of prayer, obedience, and surrender. You asked Your disciples to watch and pray—to stay alert—yet they slept while the weight of the moment unfolded. Lord, I pray that You give me that same alertness of spirit, a heart that remains awake, guarded, and attentive in prayer, especially when the hour is heavy and the path is unclear.
Teach me to watch and pray so that I may not enter into temptation. I acknowledge, Lord, that my spirit may be willing, but my flesh is weak. Keep me anchored in prayer so that weakness does not lead me away from obedience.
Father, You cried out, “Remove this cup,” yet surrendered fully when You said, “Not what I will, but what You will.” I pray that You shape my heart with that same obedience. Even when Your will is uncomfortable, painful, or contrary to my desire, give me the grace to accept it without resistance and to trust You without fear.
Lord, You knew the suffering ahead, yet You still said, “Rise, let us go.” Grant me that same courage—to walk forward faithfully when Your will leads me into difficult and uncomfortable paths. When obedience costs me comfort, certainty, or peace, help me remain steadfast, knowing that faithfulness to You is greater than every fear before me.
May my life reflect watchfulness, a prayerful heart, and unshakable obedience, fully surrendered to Your will in every season.
