And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. And Jesus said to them, ‘You will all fall away, for it is written, “I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.” But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.’ Peter said to him, ‘Even though they all fall away, I will not.’ And Jesus said to him, ‘Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.’ But he said emphatically, ‘If I must die with you, I will not deny you.’ And they all said the same.
Prayer Root: Word to Prayer
Heavenly Father,
There is a great difference between emotion and action. Strong emotions do not always lead to faithful obedience, and this is revealed in Your foretelling of Peter’s denial.
I pray, Lord, that You guard me against spiritual pride—the belief that my own willpower, passion, or emotions are enough to sustain me in moments of crisis. Guide me when my emotions are not aligned with actions that reflect Your will. Teach me to depend on Your strength rather than my own resolve.
Lord Jesus, You did not pronounce condemnation on Peter, because You knew the heart of Your disciple. I pray that when I stumble, when my emotions fail to translate into actions that glorify You, my heart will remember that failure is not final. May Your grace meet me in weakness, show mercy over mistakes, and prepare the way for restoration and recommissioning.
