Now they had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. And he cautioned them, saying, “Watch out; beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.” And they began discussing with one another the fact that they had no bread. And Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened? Having eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear? And do you not remember? When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They said to him, “Twelve.” “And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” And they said to him, “Seven.” And he said to them, “Do you not yet understand?”
Prayer Root: Word to Prayer
Heavenly Father,
It is so easy to become consumed by temporary physical and emotional needs that I miss the eternal spiritual realities You are trying to show me. It is also easy to forget all that You have done in the past when I encounter something challenging in the present. Like the disciples, I can focus on what I lack instead of remembering Your faithfulness and abundance.
I pray, Lord, that whenever I do not understand Your will, You would gently remind me—just as Jesus reminded the disciples—that You are a God of abundance, and that You always provide and protect. Help me to remember the “baskets left over” in my own life, the countless times You have already proven Yourself faithful.
I pray, Lord, that I continually fill my heart and mind with Your thoughts and Your Word, so that nothing corrupts my thinking, just as Jesus warned about the leaven of the Pharisees and Herod. Guard my heart from subtle influences that distort truth and weaken faith.
I pray, Lord, that I do not place my trust in power, position, or human strength. Let me remain rooted in the truth that some trust in horses, some in chariots, but my trust is in the Lord, my God. Keep me from spiritual blindness that fails to recognize Your mighty hand at work.
Bless me, Father, with wisdom to understand that Jesus is sufficient for every need. Teach me to trust Him fully, knowing that in Him there is more than enough—always.
