Romans 8:12–17 Heirs with Christ

Scripture (ESV)

So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

Prayer Root: Word to Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Because of Jesus Christ and Your great mercy, I have been brought into the very family of God. I did nothing to earn this grace—yet in Your amazing love, You took someone like me, helpless, burdened, and full of debt from sin, and You adopted me as Your own. You cancelled my debts and gave me the privilege of sharing in the glory You have prepared for Your children.

Lord, I pray that I will always remember that this new life comes with a holy duty: to live according to the principles of the Spirit. Help me, guide me, and shape my thoughts, actions, and desires so that I walk in the will of the Holy Spirit and never return to the old patterns of the sinful human nature that lead only to death.

Dear Father, let me understand deeply that I did not receive this gift of adoption to fall back into fear, bondage, or the slavery of sin. Let my heart continually rejoice that I am Your child—led, loved, and secured by the Spirit of God. And Lord, keep my hope alive: that just as Christ suffered and was glorified, I too—being a joint-heir with Him—will one day share in His glory. Help me live every day with that assurance, that identity, and that expectation.

Rooted in prayer, rejoicing in Christ.
