Scripture (ESV)

And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
There were also women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. When he was in Galilee, they followed him and ministered to him, and there were also many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.

Prayer Root: Word to Prayer

Heavenly Father,

This was the moment of truth—the hour history was waiting for. Darkness covered the land, heaven grew silent, and Your mission was fulfilled. Purpose was accomplished. What was broken was restored. What was separated was reconciled.

When the curtain of the temple was torn from top to bottom, You were declaring that the barrier between God and man was forever removed. Just as that veil was torn by Your hand, You tore sin apart—from the first fall of Adam to the deepest brokenness of us today. When You cried out the words of Scripture, You were not defeated; You were completing prophecy, sealing redemption, and opening the way back to the Father.

Lord, help me never take this moment lightly. Let my heart stand in awe of the cost of my freedom. Let the darkness of that hour remind me of the weight of sin, and let the torn veil remind me of the power of Your grace. Because of You, I no longer stand at a distance—I am invited into Your presence.

When I feel abandoned, remind me that You were forsaken so I could be accepted. When I feel unworthy, remind me that Your blood declared me redeemed. When fear rises within me, remind me that the work is finished and the victory is secure.

Give me a faith like the centurion, to recognize You as the Son of God—not just in words, but in surrendered belief. Give me a heart like the women who followed You faithfully, staying near the cross when others walked away. Teach me to remain steadfast, loving You not only in moments of miracles, but also in moments of suffering.

Because You breathed Your last, I now live with eternal hope. Because the veil was torn, my prayers rise freely to You. Let my life be living testimony that Your sacrifice was not in vain. I belong to You—redeemed, restored, and forever changed.

Rooted in prayer, rejoicing in Christ.
